When A Cancer Treatment is So Much #MoreThanASore!

For those of you that do not already know, I have been fighting a rare form of leukemia (chronic myelogenous leukemia) for more than nine years! That is a REALLY long time to be in treatment for cancer.

Needless to say, I am constantly fighting one side effect or another, but happy to say that I am still alive to continue to do so.

One of the most painful, annoying, and non-life-threatening side effects of cancer treatment are mouth sores. They come and they go, and they wreak havoc while they set up shop inside your mouth and on your lips. They are miserable.

There have been many times that my mouth sores are so painful that I literally wish the days away in hopes that nighttime may bring relief, only to find that I am wishing away the nights hoping that the daytime will bring relief. It is a vicious circle with no relief, day in and day out.

Sometimes they are so painful that they cause my entire face and head to ache; they render it impossible to eat, sleep, or even speak. I know that many people suffer from mouth sores, and unless you have had them, you really cannot imagine the pain, discomfort, and despair.

I have had mouth sores so severe that I have had to cancel dance instruction, beg off of family dinners, and even refused phone calls from my kids because I could not speak; due to the pain.

When speaking to your oncologist, about mouth sores, they often feel as though it is low hanging fruit. That they have much bigger fish to fry, in terms of fighting your cancer and keeping you alive. It is way down on the list of importance.

But for those of us that live with mouth sores, they are often at the forefront of our list of struggles, as they affect our daily lives, in a drastic manner.

Fighting cancer takes so much from a person, and mouth sores are a common complaint which is why I am so excited about a product that I have recently been introduced to. It is called Healios and was developed by an oncologist, to help patients with their mouth sore, in hopes of improving their quality of life.

By helping to heal or prevent mouth sores, a patient is more likely to have a positive attitude, and less likely to miss treatments. Unfortunately, there are times when mouth sores become so severe that patients cannot eat or drink normally and are forced to delay or halt treatment.

I know that f I could say good-bye to mouth sores, I would be eternally grateful! Any small victory in the fight against cancer gives you a feeling of control and well being and if I never spent another day or night with a throbbing, painful mouth I would be elated.

I recently learned about a new product, Healios, which can be used during a mouthsore breakout or to prevent one. It is a simple swish and swallow solution and it comes as a flavored or unflavored powder that rehydrates with water. (A great option if your tastebuds have been affected by treatment.)

Healios® works by promoting and maintaining the health of epithelial cells and mucosal tissues which line your mouth and digestive tract. What really makes Healios Special is that it contains glutamine, which is a natural amino acid that helps damaged cells heal. Unlike ordinary glutamine powders, Healios’ special formulation increases glutamine absorption directly at the mucosal lining that protects your mouth, throat, and esophagus.

I am extremely excited to have just given this product a try, as I will try just about anything to prevent mouth sores!

My Assessment:

Healios came in a smartly packaged box with the product and a mixing bottle. I chose the unflavored option.

It seems to give you the option of mixing the powder with a little (25ml) liquid, or a lot (125ml); I chose a little!

It mixed up easily and the instructions are to swish it in your mouth for 10 seconds and then swallow.
Upon doing so, I noticed a slight flavor, not unpleasant, but definitely there; kind of fruity. I seemed to get immediate relief from the small sore that I currently have, sort of a soothing effect.

I swished, I swallowed and now we shall see!

I pray that Healios will help me to put an end to my mouth sores!
