Leukemia Sucks, and So Does Addiction!

Sometimes life can become overwhelming. I know that when I was first diagnosed with leukemia, that I met another person that had been dealing with the disease for several years. He became so depressed, that he often turned to alcohol, thinking that this was the answer. Inadvertently, he had a son that was a young adult that was addicted to drugs, and had been since he was a teen.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I often wonder just how much genetics play into this disease that we call “addiction”, but I find it interesting to see what “types” of people have trouble with addiction and what “types” do not. Sometimes I meet people that are just so strong, that no matter what life has thrown at them, they just carry on, and addiction just never enters into the picture. For others, a broken finger nail can drive them to drink. I cannot imagine having to fight the urge to drink, or use drugs; I have a hard enough time with chocolate! Sometimes I wonder if there is a chemical imbalance, in an addict’s make-up that has gone undiagnosed, and therefore, they are “self-medicating” or trying to by abusing drugs and alcohol.

Whatever the case, addiction ruins your life and the life of your family. Atlanta drug abuse rehab centers and Atlanta alcohol rehab is a great place to begin your treatment, if you are in the Atlanta area. They offer a full range of programs and are dedicated to helping their residents live a drug and alcohol free life. Becoming drug and alcohol free is not any easy task, and not many people can do it alone. If you suffer from addiction, please get help!

  1. Oh Michele, I think there is a "mix" of genetics, and perhaps a living situation a person grew up in, part of an "alcoholic family" (or any kind of addiction) places each family member into a "role" of sorts... I agree people drink to self medicate, and for a myriad of reasons, any disease is heart breaking, adding an addiction on top of it in order to cope is insult to injury. Many Prayers to those dealing with one, or both of these issues. x0x0
    always, julia
